Brief CV

Prof. Artur Krężel is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Biotechnology, University of Wrocław, and Head of the Department of Chemical Biology (since 2016). He is a distinguished researcher and academic lecturer with more then 20 years of scientific experience spanning bioinorganic chemistry, chemical biology, protein engineering, and analytical biochemistry.

His research focuses on metal-dependent regulation of protein function, with particular emphasis on zinc biology—including metalloproteins obtain their metal ions under cellular conditions and how these ions control protein structure, stability, and activity. His group also develops fluorescent and regioselective chemical tools for multifunctional protein labeling, as well as analytical methods for monitoring intracellular metal-ion fluctuations. Prof. Krężel’s work integrates protein engineering, synthetic chemistry, structural mass spectrometry, biophysical and computational approaches, and molecular/structural biology.

Prof. Krężel has co-authored ~150 peer‑reviewed publications and has presented at numerous international scientific conferences, including invited, keynote, and plenary lectures.  He has served as Principal Investigator on 14 research grants and acts as a reviewer for major funding agencies and journals. He is an Editor of Biometals (Springer Nature). His contributions have been recognized with major distinctions, including the POLITYKA Passport for research achievements and the Bogusława and Włodzimierz Trzebiatowski Medal of the Polish Chemical Society for accomplishments in inorganic chemistry.

My research focuses on the discovery of Zn²⁺ binding sites in human proteins and their impact on cellular physiology. I develop bioanalytical methods to investigate the functional roles of metallothionein isoforms. Additionally, I integrate chemical and enzymatic approaches to create techniques for the functional modification of proteins, aiming to expand our understanding of protein behavior and regulation.

My research focuses on how zinc ions (Zn²⁺) act as molecular glue in immune signaling. I study how Zn²⁺ enables the formation of CD4/CD8-Lck complexes, which are crucial for T cell activation and development. By exploring their structure, zinc affinity, and signaling potential, I aim to better understand immune cell fate and function.

As a hybrid of lab technician and lab manager, I’m involved to some extent in nearly every research project within our group. Having studied DNA repair pathways during my PhD, the project involving Rad50 remains closest to my scientific interests.

My research interests focus on biocatalysis, with particular emphasis on enzymatic glycosylation of flavonoids and protein engineering. I have a strong background in molecular biology and plasmid design, and currently I am investigating the mechanisms of copper transmission across chaperone proteins in human cells. My work combines advanced molecular techniques with biochemical characterization to better understand and engineer biological processes.

I am particularly interested in the biochemical and structural analysis of proteins of potential physiological importance, with a special emphasis on protein–protein, protein–DNA, and protein–ligand interactions. My research interests also extend to neurological proteins and their roles in energy homeostasis, as well as their involvement in neuropathologies such as amyloid-related disorders.

My research interests focus on the molecular mechanisms of metal sensing and regulation in cells, particularly through metal-responsive transcription factors such as MTF-1. I am especially interested in the role of cysteine-rich motifs in metal binding and their impact on protein dimerization and gene regulation. By combining biochemical, spectroscopic, and structural approaches, I aim to better understand how metal ions like Zn(II) influence cellular homeostasis and stress responses.

Reaserch Intrests

I am a PhD student at the Department of Biological Chemistry at the University of Wrocław and a graduate in Biotechnology from Wrocław University of Science and Technology. My research interests focus on metallothioneins – metal-binding proteins that play a key role in metal homeostasis and cellular protection. In my doctoral project, I am working on obtaining and characterizing the MT1HL1 isoform for the first time, investigating its biochemical and biophysical properties as well as its role in zinc and copper metabolism. I gained research experience as a laboratory manager at the Łukasiewicz Research Network – PORT and as a senior technician in the spectrometry laboratory at the Institute of Soil Science, Plant Nutrition and Environmental Protection at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, which allowed me to develop both research and organizational skills
